The Alternative Incarceration Center
The Stamford Alternative Incarceration Center (AIC), under the guidance of CTE, provides supervision and services to accused and court sentenced individuals age sixteen and above. The three main goals and objectives of the program are:
|
|
· To engage individuals, and their family members, when possible, in becoming more self-sufficient and self-reliant through education, vocational training, cognitive skill development, alcohol and other drug education, life skill development, employment readiness, and guidance in obtaining gainful employment.
· To assist individuals in addressing antisocial behaviors that has led to legal problems and adversely impacted their ability to be productive members of society.
· To reduce jail/prison overcrowding in a way that reduces the financial burden on the community and the State and still maintains a high level of public safety through intensive supervision of AIC clients. In addition, some clients are expected to give back to the community in the form of community service.
An important belief for the AIC staff is. That a client can change!
The Program encompasses six main focus areas. Depending on the referral sources' conditions and the initial intake and assessments conducted by AIC staff or the referral sources, clients may participate in one or more focus areas. They are as follows:
Case Management:
Staff will work with clients to develop individual service plans with goals and strategies to address both their criminogenic needs and non-criminogenic needs. Using assessments results staff will identify clients' strengths and assess clients' motivation to change. If clients have needs outside the realm of our program, they will be linked to other area service providers for assistance.
Education:
Clients may be enrolled in one of two education programs. E² - Henry Street is a unique program that is a collaborative between Stamford Public Schools, The Superior Court, and CTE/AIC. It is for young offenders between the ages of 16 and 21 and affords them the opportunity to earn their High School Diploma, while being supervised by the AIC, Monday to Friday, year-round. E² - GED Track allows clients to earn their GED while in the AIC program. Individual and family therapy is also available to youth between the ages of 16 and 23.
Employment Services:
Clients are assisted with the development of job search skills, from resume writing to interviewing, along with behavior management with the goals of securing or retaining employment in a group setting. Clients who are employed can work on strategies for working towards promotions.
Cognitive Restructuring:
A curriculum based small group working with clients on thinking and thought management. The group works to replace counterproductive ways of thinking with pro-social thing and attitudes with role-plays, problem solving , emotional regulation and other self-management and coping skills.
Substance Abuse Education:
A curriculum based open small group working with clients on eliminating chemical dependency. Our Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor may assist clients during their participation. Individual sessions, educational groups, urinalysis, referrals to inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment are some of the services provided.
Community Service Program:
Under the direction of the Community Service Coordinator, clients perform tasks such as landscaping, grounds keeping, painting and general maintenance. One site of on-going community service is the Atlantic Street approach to the South End where litter is picked up, weeds are pulled, and overgrowth is trimmed. Another site is exit 35 of the Merritt Parkway , which AIC has adopted and maintains on an on-going basis. Community services that doubles as a vocational training is highly sought after. We want our clients to always be preparing for that next level of employment that will lead them to increased self-sufficiency and self-esteem and to come to see themselves as active, productive members of the community.
